Among APA continuing education courses, there are arrays of topics with some that are more popular than others. These classes are offered in a variety of ways, too, such as via newsletters, DVDs, online courses, books and on-site trainings. The initials A.P.A. stand for the American Psychological Association. This organization is a group of 150,000+ psychologists who've banded together to be a strong voice for those who've chosen psychology as their career path as well as their patients and society at large. This association promotes scientific research, advocating with governmental agencies and holding meetings to present papers in order to share their findings. Here are some of the resources available:
- Newsletters: There is a newsletter based series of tests that comes out four times each year. It's called the CRD or Clinician's Research Digest.
- DVDs: The American Psychological Association also has a series of DVDs that demonstrate their approaches to treatment, as well. Some of the therapeutic approaches shared in this manner include substance abuse, bullying and more.
- Online courses: Online courses continue to gain in popularity because they are convenient, comprehensive and offer a wide range of topics.
- Books: By reading books and being tested on the material, therapists and counselors can gain CEUs.
- On-site training: By attending workshops and trainings, psychologists and those working in therapy fields can gain APA ongoing education credits, too.
Some topics are more popular than others. The diverse selection offers a variety of options for PhDs, MSWs, LPCs and MDs to explore new concepts and to learn about the latest in scientific theory and research. Some hot topics include:
- Ethics: Being an ethical practitioner is crucial for all concerned. Courses are offered on how to accomplish this to better care for clients and protect oneself.
- Eating disorders: Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia can create havoc with physical and mental well-being.
- Children: Children's issues range from depression, anxiety, ADHD, bullying and much more.
- Adolescents: The adolescent phase of life is one fraught with angst, rebellion and transitions. Helping teens and families experience a successful life stage during adolescence can make a huge difference in their lives.
- Geriatrics: Elderly individuals have their own set of challenges, including grief and loss issues to deal with.
- Substance abuse: Substance abuse continues to challenge many patients and clients; having the latest techniques will help therapists and addicts.
- Anxiety and depression: The mood disorders of anxiety and depression sometimes go hand and hand. There are many psychotherapy techniques to help as well as prescription meds to alter brain chemistry.
Whether a clinician decides to get his or her CEUs via newsletters, DVDs, online coursework, books or at a training facility on-site, the important things are that the topics are pertinent and the trainings topnotch. Therapists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists and psychologists all benefit from the APA continuing education courses. The American Psychological Association puts its stamp of approval on the best quality courses available through their organization or through a host of others around the nation.
