People attend culinary school for a variety of reasons. Most people do it because they love to cook. They may dream of a future career path in food service, or are simply tired of eating microwaved meals and fast food. Regardless of the reasons for attending culinary school, learning how to cook through culinary classes is an investment in time and talent that rewards the student in a variety of ways. There are a number of equipment requirements for future chefs to purchase. They are not all needed right away, and more specialized equipment may be necessary for certain types of cooking.
Class Use
While some culinary schools and programs supply the basic food and equipment necessities for students to use in class, eventually they will purchase their own to use at home or take to their new job. Some instructors request students bring the utensils and pans to each class, while others allow students to borrow them so that they can get a feel for the best type and most comfortable style or brand. These items can later be purchased from specialty shops and department stores. Students can use special online coupons or use codes for online discounts to purchase quality merchandise, such as cutlery, aprons, dishware and spice sets. Grocery store coupons are also available for students to pick up ingredients for class and to practice dishes at home.
Cutlery
Cutlery is one of the most important parts of learning how to chef. The type of knife, size and technique used on different types of foods make a notable difference in how things taste. Learning how to chop, dice, slice, julienne, shave, cube, filet and cut is a matter of having the right technique and cutlery, and can make the difference between a cook and a master of the kitchen. Students will learn from their professors which knives to use when and how to achieve these different effects.
Mixing Equipment
From dough mixers to whisks, mixing ingredients is an art form. Students will need to learn how to use hand mixers, stand mixers, spatulas, blenders and food processors. They will eventually purchase items for different types of specialty cooking, such as pastries, pizzas and main dishes.
Pots and Pans
Cooking on the stove or in the oven requires a variety of pans, such as broiling pans, baking sheets, wire baskets, saute and frying pans, double boilers and different sized pots. Deep and shallow pans create different effects, as do portions sizes as compared to the size of the pans used.
A culinary student will learn how to make sauces, main dishes, desserts, soups and other tasty masterpieces with the proper use of special equipment and technique.
