You know that you need to go to school for a full time course and get your degree, but what degree course should you choose? This is a big decision, because it will affect your entire future. It will affect which jobs you are qualified to do, and it determines how satisfied you are with your life in general. The right degree program is out there for you, but you will have to do some searching to identify it.
What are Your Interests?
Make a list of things that interest you in general. If you have any hobbies, they should be on this list, along with things that you have a natural curiosity about. If you find yourself thinking about animals a lot, then animals may be on the list. If you are interested in agriculture or farming, then that may be on the list. You want to write down anything at all that gets your attention, makes you think, or drives your interest in learning more.
What Do You Love Talking About?
Add to the list anything that you find yourself talking about regularly. Are there particular types of current news stories that seem to catch your attention? Are there topics that you find yourself talking about for hours, or which always get your attention when brought up by someone else? These are more options that hint at what full time course you should be taking to start a career that is fulfilling and enjoyable.
What Do You Already Know About?
Add to the list topics that you already know a lot about, since they will be easy targets for your degree. You will get through the beginning full time coursework much easier if you already have a foundation of knowledge to see you through. You will have to study harder when you get to the advanced classes, but you will have something to get you through the beginning of your degree at least.
What Do You Envision Yourself Doing Forever?
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a career perfectly matched to your personality, strengths and weaknesses. What do you see yourself doing? Add these career options to the list, rounding out your options for a full time degree course.
Decision Time
Go through the list and quickly cross out anything that you do not think corresponds to any full time courses or degrees available to you. Then go back through the list and cross out things that just aren't as interesting to you as most other things on the list. This narrows your options down to potential careers that you find interesting and worthwhile. These are all things that you could spend your life working with, while feeling accomplished and satisfied.
Finally, start seeking out degree programs which could fit with the remaining items on your list. You will likely find many of the items on your list are encompassed by the same programs, which will make it easier to see which full time courses or degrees are best for your future career.
