Engineering is a highly diverse field with dozens of specialties. Structural, highway, railroad, chemical, waste management, electrical and aeronautical are only a few of the many engineering fields today. The studies are specific, and sometimes only a few schools teach the necessary courses, which can be expensive.

Fortunately, financial assistance is available for those in high school and in college. Some scholarships are set aside for specific fields of engineering, while others may specify a school. Some scholarships are one-time awards, while a few provide a set sum every year. Full rides are available at different colleges and universities.

The students must fill out applications in full, collect, complete and turn in all of the necessary letters of recommendation, proof of grades, community service and whatever the scholarship committee or administrator requires. At times, the student must meet with the committee or administrator face to face. The students should dress their best and prepare to answer questions such as "What is your goal as an engineer" and others along those lines. Nervousness, fright, changing answers or defensive answers can take someone out of the running for the money. Practice with friends or a trusted school counselor.

Study all of the requirements of the scholarship before applying. Some require a certain grade average to be maintained, others may require a certain number of community service or internship with an engineering firm. Failure to meet these requirements could result in the loss of the scholarship.

For students interested in transportation engineering, payload handling (PLH) administration and planning is a must. Those constructing loads, highways and overpasses must take this into account with current and future traffic planning. Interning with a commercial or municipal company will tell the scholarship committee or administrator that the applicant is serious about this field.

The best way to find engineering scholarships is to search online for both engineering scholarships as a generic term and by the specific field. Write down every scholarship the applicant remotely qualifies for. Sometimes, awards are made to solitary applicants. Note whether the award is at a specific school, a one-time award or a yearly award. Discard any that do not apply, and carefully follow the application process for the rest. It could take weeks or months to hear back from a committee or administrator. In the meantime, continue to search for scholarships in library books and listings at the school.

Keep in mind that many scholarships for college require students to be full-time students. There are programs for part-time students as well. Reading and following the requirements is the best way to apply for engineering scholarships.
