Getting a decent tutor can be a difficult task though most people do not understand what it entails becoming a good tutor means. A good tutor is one who encourages and provides their expertise in their field of tutoring while directing their students to do the best they can.

1. A good tutor employs strategies in the tutoring process as well as in the content that they deal with. They must constantly strive to become the best in what they do through a lot of research and practice, so as to guide their students well. The tutor must have unambiguous expectations for each of their learners as well as all the other participants in a student's learning process. In order to maintain discipline and order, the tutor must operate under a certain set of rules, which both them and the learners must abide with in order to get rid of struggles that are not necessary during the learning process. The regulations however must be very clear and fair, where all the parties involved do not mind to uphold them.

2. The tutor must have all the relevant knowledge of the learner, which is applicable in the learning process, and must identify their strengths and limitations.

3. One of the things that a good tutor must do is to develop a relationship of trust with their learners where the instructor uses the abilities of the learners to make them understand and complete a task. The tutor must be honest and open minded towards the student in all that they do and help them to become better at who they are. If the student does not respond positively to the instructor or vice versa, then the instructor must take the opportunity to recommend another one, since the aim is to help the learner.

4. A good tutor instills confidence in the learner, and ensures that the learner is neither afraid of passing and especially of failing. Learning, just like most things in life, has its ups and downs and the learner should be well aware of that.

5. The good tutor will ensure that the learner is well prepared for class work, as well as assignments. The tutor and the learner come to an agreement where they all state their targets and expectations, which all have to be objective and realistic.

6. A good tutor must always give the learner positive feedback as they help them to learn problem solving techniques.
