There is a common misconception that part time educational programs are easier versions of full time educational programs. Some may sign up for these programs thinking they can just breeze through to their degree, only to find that it is more difficult than they imagined. This is especially true for those trying to juggle a part time program with a full time work schedule, a family, and other time intensive responsibilities. If you are a bit concerned about your ability to make it through a part time program, consider the following tips for MBA success.
Send Out an Alert
You have to alert everyone in your private life that you are going back to school. Do this as soon as you decide that you are going to do this, even if you have not yet signed up for the program. Anyone who depends on you will need to know that you may not be as available for them as you have been in the past. Anyone who you normally take care of and spend a lot of time with may need time to adjust to the fact that you may not be around as much.
It is also important to set some ground rules for children, your spouse, and others in your life. Make sure they understand that you will need time for studies and that you will have to make it to classes on time so you can do well with your MBA program. Work out the boundaries and expectations so everyone knows how things will be changing.
Don't Deceive Yourself
Do not go into an MBA program thinking it is going to easy. You will have challenges, both in terms of learning the material and making things work in your personal life. Think ahead to any problems that may complicate the study process and come up with creative solutions now. This will make it easier to adjust once you sign up for your program and get started.
Talk with the Boss
Discuss your intentions to go back to school with your boss. This may put you in the running for a raise or advancement within the company. They may also have information about tuition programs that are available through the company. Some businesses now have other programs that make it easier for employees to go back to school for their MBA. You may never know what is available to you without having this talk with your boss about your intentions.
Give a Little
Finally, you have to willing to give a little while you are going through your part time MBA program. This may mean dropping some of the social engagements you typically enjoy so you can spend what free time you have with your family. It may also mean giving up financially so that you can afford to pay for your MBA studies.
Think ahead to what may need to give in your life in order for this to work. Remember, you are not giving these things up forever. It is a temporary sacrifice that you make in order to secure your MBA and advance your potential in the business world. It is important to acknowledge that others in your life will have to give some as well.
