It is very difficult to find any adult who doesn't like music. Everyone has their own taste and enjoys different types of music, but there aren't many people out there who completely dislike music. In fact, most adults enjoy listening to the radio or downloaded music in their free time. They listen in their car on the way to work and in the shower when getting ready for the day. They may even listen to it through an mp3 player when working out or running errands.
There is a reason the majority of people on earth have such a deep seated connection to music. It has the ability to bond with a person just like another human and it can speak to a deeper part of the listener's soul and mind. Yet, it is not threatening or dangerous. There is something very soothing about it, even when the lyrics hit home and draw up emotion.
This is why lovers often write songs for their loved ones when they want to express deep emotion, and it is exactly why every child needs to have music in their life from a very early age. When children are allowed to experience a variety of musical genres, they learn to feel that connection to the music from a very early age. They learn that expressing and feeling emotion in this manner is completely natural and acceptable.
Children do not understand and express their emotions as well as adults. While they have strong emotions and feelings just like everyone else, they often do not know how to appropriately express what they are feeling. Even when they are encouraged to openly express themselves, they often struggle to put how they feel into words.
This is why many children with emotional disturbances act out behaviorally. They may not say that they are in pain or that they have been hurt, but they express those emotions by trying to make others feel as they feel. These are children who struggle to put their emotions into acceptable forms of expression, or who feel it is unsafe for them to express emotion.
One way for parents to encourage children to get in touch with their emotions and express them in a healthy manner is to read books that explain different emotions in childlike terms. There are entire children's book series dedicated to exploring emotions. These books help children put a word to their emotions. Knowing what they are feeling makes it easier to express how they feel to others.
Music is another way for children to express how they feel in an appropriate manner. Children learn to feel an emotional connection to different sounds and lyrics, and they may even start to express themselves in songs or with musical instruments. It is quite amazing what young children can do with music when they are exposed to it in a safe manner from a young age.
Children who are exposed to music at a young age are more likely to use it as a coping tool when they get older. They learn to bond with the tunes and express themselves through the melodies and it becomes a tremendous help when life gets stressful. This is why every child deserves some type of music class. It isn't just about becoming a professional performer. It's about expressing emotion and coping with life.
