As an elementary teacher, one of the subjects that you can often have the most fun with in your classroom is science. Science can be very hands on and it can teach the children a lot about the world around them.
Children tend to really enjoy actively doing and learning things hands on. Of course, you will have to make sure that the projects you choose to do stay safe, or it will not be fun anymore and you may be required to stop doing any hands on projects.
One of the ways to help make sure that your hands on science projects stay safe is to determine and enforce a set of safety rules in regards to the use of the science equipment. Once you have established these rules you will want to make sure that you review them thoroughly with the children so that they understand them and can follow them.
It is a good idea to write these rules on a poster and post them somewhere in your classroom so that they are easy to see. This will remind the children how to stay safe during science activities.
One of the rules that you may want to post on the wall is that each child should read the instructions fully two times before they begin doing anything. This will help make sure that they understand what to do and how to do it safely.
Often mistakes can be made by reading and following one instruction at a time. However, if the children know what to expect next they will be able to see how the steps fit together.
It is also very important to teach them how to read and follow instructions so that they will be able to stay safe in their college classes when they are using more advanced chemicals and dangerous tools. If you want to make sure that your class understands the instructions, you may want to begin by reviewing the instructions as a class.
Then, have each child explain all of the instructions to a partner or to his or her team. This will show you how well each child understands what he or she should do.
You can review the instructions however many times you think is necessary depending on the understanding of your students and on how complicated the project is. The next rule you may want to have listed is one that tells the students that they should get only the tools that are listed as necessary for the project and put them on the table or desk.
This will keep the work area free from clutter and mess. Clutter and mess can make a simple project much more dangerous because there are other things to distract and get in the way.
Teach the children to only get and use the materials that are listed on the instruction sheet. Then, detail a rule about how the children should only follow one instruction at a time.
By trying to make the project go faster by doing several steps at a time, mistakes can be made and the project can suddenly become much more confusing and complicated for the child. Try to create projects that will allow them to do only one step at a time.
Due to the fact that the children are learning, mistakes will happen. Try to deal with these mistakes with patience and encouragement.
It is also a good idea to post another rule that tells your students to stop and ask for help when they make a mistake. This will help them know what to do if something goes wrong.
The experiments you create for children in elementary school are designed to help them learn so that they will not make mistakes in the future. Keep this in mind as the students make mistakes because they are bound to make mistakes even during the simplest of tasks.
Remember that the students are learning even if the experiment does not turn out like they expect because of a mistake. The mistake will help them learn what to do better next time.
The last rule that you will definitely want to post is that they should clean up thoroughly after they are done. This will keep the classroom safe for the rest of the studies that take place there.
As you keep the classroom clean and safe, you will have a great environment for teaching children numerous things throughout the year. You will also be able to keep them safe.
