This is something that has evolved a lot with time. Men's fashion is always being edited by designers and demanding consumers. However, even if it is definitely evolving, the base dress code has been kept untouched over time. The only thing you have to do is understand what the event's invitation demands you to wear, and from there on, put together a good outfit for the activity.

The most common formal dress codes are related to the time of the day the dress will be worn. So basically, there is a different dress code combination meant for every time of the day. When an invitation includes the phrase "Black tie optional" it means that the dress they expect is formal. If the event will take place during the daytime, people normally refer to this dress as "morning dress". This dress is normally made of black coats, or grey-white combinations. Sometimes they are worn by grooms in weddings. Formal, business' receptions also accept this style to be worn by people assisting, especially in Europe. These morning outfits normally include gloves when they are used in Europe. It is not very common to wear them in America though.

When it is about an evening formal outfit, colors normally vary from blue, to grey and sometimes black. Shirts used with these colors are normally plain white, or white with some patterns. Some men like to use ties in the afternoon. However, it is not necessary. Ties can be worn with shine patterns or simple plain colors. It always depends on what the even particularly is; sometimes it is not appropriate to wear a patterned tie. Whether to wear a suit or a tuxedo is totally your decision, although sometimes it is more appropriate to wear suits on evening events. If you are wearing a tie on an evening event, you have to know that only silk ties are acceptable during this specific time of the day.

There are some variations in the modern formal dress code that you should know about. Today, the formal dress code is nothing like it was fifty years ago. Today, in an event such as the Oscars, anyone can wear a semi-formal outfit with extravagant colors or materials. It is definitely not necessary to wear a tie. However, if someone had worn such an outfit during the 40's, they would probably been kicked out of the event. This free dressing code that has been introduced these days is not full of etiquette rules as it was before.

When it comes to a night event, the normal thing to wear is a black suit with a white shirt. Silk ties are the most appropriate for looking good in a night event. Black shoes are always the best choice for night occasions. As long as your shoes are well waxed and shinny, you can use almost any style you want. Make sure you suit fits both your body shape and your skin color. Some tones of white and black are not a good match for some skin colors. The best thing you can do is go to a store and try the outfits yourself. This way you will be able to see if you like the way it looks or not. It is not a very good idea to buy suits and tuxedos online, as there is no way to try them.
