The breast pocket on suits was not highly regarded by American men for approximately four decades. In fact it was thought off as an extra pocket where you could carry just about anything, right from sunglasses, business cards, and even a pack of cigarettes.
Fashion experts have said that if you are not wearing a pocket square, you're not dressed. A few fashionable men have also said that if you don't have a pocket square, your suit is naked and is incomplete.
We all know that a man needs to dress importantly, and with a pocket square on your suit achieving an important look is easy. In the early 1900's a well groomed gentleman would never have walked out in a suit without a pocket square. But by mid century the pocket square began to fade out of fashion circles.
However, men today still prefer a pocket square to wear on important occassions like their wedding day, anniversay or any other formal occassion. Here are a few tricks to help you fold a pocket square.
There are several ways you can fold a pocket square in, and while some are very easy, others might prove to be a task. The simplest of all pocket square folds is the straight fold.
When you use the straight fold, you will wind up with one side of the pocket fold emerging from your pocket in a rectangular shape.
You first place your pocket square flatly and fold the left to the right and the bottom to the top but not an all the way fold.
Then fold the pocket square three times perpendicularly so that it is able to fit the pocket of your suit. You will notice a one corner fold on top of your pocket suit; this is one of the best folds. Here is how you achieve it.
You start by placing your pocket square on a flat area with one side facing up and the other down.
Now by bringing the part that is at the bottom to the one that is at the top so that you create a triangular shape in the process.
Take the right corner of the triangle and place it on the right corner and place the left corner to the right as well. You get a long pointed triangular cloth.
Fold a part of the bottom bringing it to the top but not completely at the top.
Now position this finished folding on your suit and make alterations until you are satisfied that you have the correct pointed position emerging from the suit pocket.
It's really quite simple to make a puff fold; All you have to do is place the pocket square on a flat surface and then nip the cloth at its central part and let it fold alone as you hold it with one hand while you tenderly bring together the pocket square's bottom. Put the pocket square in position in your suit and fidget around with it until you feel that you have got the correct puffiness.
These three are the major pocket square fold. There are many other variations though for example the pointed pocket square can be a one point square fold or a two or even three or four point square fold. Once you are familiar with these three folds, you can experiment and variate how you fold your pocket square.
