There has been a sea of change in the men's fashion industry over the past few decades. The colors, fabrics and styles keep changing constantly due to factors which have a direct impact on the fashion industry.

Even factors like war and other major world events have an impact on the fashion industry. With the younger generation being much more fashion conscious as compared to the earlier generations, the men's fashion world today is at par with their counterparts. To understand these gradual changes that have come over the men's fashion industry over the past few decades let us have a look at the following factors.

During the 1920's, the men's fashion was limited to 'Daywear' and 'Eveningwear'. Suits were accompanied with light mellow colored shirts. The suits were usually tailcoats and the shirts were starched until they were crisp and all this was rounded up with a tall hat and black leather shoes. This was a debonair formal evening wear of the men in the 1920's.

In the 1930's when the Great Wall Street crash took place, its impact was felt not only on the economic world but also on the fashion industry. There were huge cutbacks on the way the clothes were manufactured and sold. Men's fashion also underwent a lot of change during this period. The suits were designed is such a manner that made the torso look wider and the shoulders too were accentuated by using padding. This was the period in which double breasted suits gained popularity and still remain in demand to date. Charcoal, steel, slate, navy, and midnight blue were commonly used colors for suits during that period.

After the war, during the 1940's men's fashion went through another change. Men started preferring long, full-cut clothing. It was during this period that the casual shirts came into fashion and they became popular beachwear especially along the coasts of Florida and California.

1950' and 1960's saw many changes in the way suits were worn. Also, men became bolder with their preferences of colors. Velvet was used to design the suit collars and men even preferred to wear pink shirts. 1960's also saw the launch of narrow pants in the men's fashion world; these were mostly worn by the fashionable young men. Trousers of bright and bold colors like purples, oranges and greens became fashion statements among the younger generation of that period.

1970 was the disco era and the bell bottoms made their first appearance in the men's fashion world for the first time during this period. Nylon, acrylic, and polyester were the fabrics most popular in this decade, and unisex clothes were very much preferred.

Leather and studded jean jackets were totally a fashion statement in the 1980's - they were the modern replacement to the formal suits of the older generations. It was completely acceptable to wear a T-shirt instead of a crisp shirt under dinner jackets and this trend is existent even today.

Fashion has come a long way over the decades and is still changing with times and many factors influence these changes. The key to remain fashionable is to keep pace with these changes and adopt them to suit the individual lifestyle.
