How often is the phrase, 'it's all child's play' used in everyday language? I have definitely heard it a fair few times! The general connotation being that the task being referred to is easy and requires very little effort. However, child's play is actually extremely important for personal development and is a very serious pastime which should not be taken lightly! As children grow so does their type of play and these developments in their ability to play independently, creatively, with toys and play furniture and with other children all directly impact the type of adult they will become.
As a baby children tend to play independently, beginning to gain an awareness of their body and immediate surroundings. Baby toys help to facilitate this individual development by increasing self awareness. Plus, it should not be forgotten that baby's must address the serious task of getting their foot into their mouth. Child's play this may be, but it is very important stuff!
Once children become toddlers they tend to be mobile and engage in a different level of play. They tend to continue to play independently, however they are more active and can play with larger toys. At this stage children are have accepted that they simply cannot put their foot in their mouth and are focusing on getting that square brick into the triangular hole.
Before children reach nursery School age they begin to develop social skills and interact with other children. They play games such as hide and seek and create elaborate displays using toys and play furniture to enhance these. These early experiences are vital for building communication skills and beginning to understand concepts such as sharing.
When children reach School age they are well versed in independent play and are embarking on communal play. They are aware of themselves, others and toys and other objects. At this stage they are likely to come in contact with play School furniture. I can assure you that sailing the seven seas in a wooden play galleon is no mean feat. This play furniture is very important for facilitating creative thinking, team work, sharing and consideration for others.
Surely 'it's child's play' should refer to attempting the impossible, creating something amazing with only the basic materials and having no fear or inhibitions? This would be far more appropriate than suggesting that child's play is easy, no one would be the person they are without having carried out some serious playing as a child.
