Founded in 1974, the University of Tennessee credited as being one of the most prestigious educational institutions of the country. It operates as a flagship institution of the University of Tennessee system that is operated on a statewide basis. According to the most recent ranking of universities by the U.S news and world report in 2010, the University of Tennessee ranks at 106 amongst the national universities. It acquired the 52nd position amongst the collection of public institutions of higher learning in the country. One of the most distinguishing features of UT is the fact that it is one of the few universities of the country to offer extensive research opportunities to its faculty and students.

The University is affiliated with a number of other prestigious organizations and institutions including Howard H. Baker, University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, and Jr. Center for Public Policy and the University of Tennessee Arboretum. It also has a direct partnership with the University of Tennessee Medical Center and houses, one of the two level I trauma center in the region. Because of its aggressive medical research programs it has acquired the reputation of being a teaching hospital. The vast majority of graduates from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center choose to pursue their career in this very medical Center.

Football has been a prominent part of the history of the University. Over the course of history they it has won many national competitions in the sport. The University was also subjected to severe damage and was almost brought to the ground during the Civil War after which it went through extensive rebuilding to bounce back as a top class university once again

To its credit is the fact that you can not find another university in this part of the world with as many as 3 presidential papers editing projects and also holds collections of all these papers from three US presidents. The presidents include James K. Polk, Andrew Jackson, and Andrew Johnson.

There are a total of three campuses that form part of the University. These include the main campus at Knoxville, the agricultural campus situated right next to the main campus and the Cherokee research campus. The main campus is further divided into three distinct blocks that include housing, academics and athletics. The entire campus is laid out on hilly terrain with the Tennessee River flowing at the south end creating a unique and interesting ambience.
The agricultural campus which is directly adjacent to the main campus operates as the principle agricultural and natural sciences research infrastructure. However in comparison to the entire set up it occupies only a small portion of the land.

The two Cherokee Research Center is located in downtown Knoxville. It features brand-new world-class facilities that are devoted to the study of nanotechnology, materials sciences, neutron sciences, biomedical science, environmental science and energy and climate studies.
As one of the leading educational institutes of the United States the University of Tennessee is constantly involved in research and development to expand its horizon and raise its standards.
