Notre Dame University is a private Catholic university that was founded in 1842. The school is located near South Bend, Indiana in the United States, and the campus is four miles from the Michigan state line and an hour and a half's drive from Chicago. Founded by Father Edward Sorin, Notre Dame has educated many well-known people including former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, football legend Joe Montana and talk show host Phil Donahue.

Students face a tough admissions policy at this coveted university and over seventy percent of the freshman class academically ranked among the top five percent of their high school graduating class. Notre Dame was strictly for men only until 1972 when the school first opened its doors to women. Today, women make up for nearly half of the total student population.

Education has always gone hand in hand with community values and volunteering at the university. The school's Center for Social Concerns is the campus cornerstone for student volunteers and nearly eighty percent of the students at this Catholic university partake in some form of community volunteerism during their stay at the school. Over 10 percent devote a full year or more of volunteer work after graduation.

Four out of five of Notre Dame's 8,000 undergrads live in the campus dormitories as residence hall life is considered to be the hallmark of the Notre Dame experience. All on-campus dormitories are single-sex units-there are fifteen dorms for men and fourteen for women. Because of the Catholic affiliation each dormitory has one nun or one priest as a resident. There are no Greek fraternity or sorority groups at the school but most of the students reside in the same dormitory for all four years.

Notre Dame is a beautiful university. The expansive grounds boast two lakes on 1,250 sprawling acres. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the 14-story Hesburgh Library and the over 130 foot high mural of Christ the Teacher are some of the most well known landmarks. The gilded Golden Dome with the statue of Mary that sits atop the Main Building hovers proudly over this campus where faith is treasured and traditions are shared and respected. The Dome can be seen from nearly every point on this visually pleasing campus.

Notre Dame is divided into five separate colleges and one professional school. This past year the U.S. News and World Report ranked Notre Dame's undergrad program number 20 among all universities in the United States. The university's law school has been consistently ranked among the top law schools in the nation as well.
Notre Dame is very well known for its sports programs with the Fighting Irish football team being the most recognized and respected all across the U.S. The football team competes in the Division 1 NCAA bracket and has won eleven national championships and seven Heisman Trophies.

Sixty-two Notre Dame players are members of the College Football Hall of Fame. The Fighting Irish play their home games in the impressive 81,000 seat Notre Dame Stadium on campus.
