One way to motivate children to learn mathematics is making math fun to learn. It does not have to be the usual boring and dull way of learning the multiplication table or solving problems. If your children are having a little difficulty in math and sometimes have less interest on doing their assignments in math, you may want to make them learn math the exciting way.
Most often, children struggle when it comes to learning math and not limiting them to the usual way of learning can be your key to motivating them to learn. Flash cards are the usual ways of learning math in school but you don't have to stick to what the teacher's are using. There are many creative ways at home to make them learn.
Link math to real life. In making math fun, sometimes you just have to make your children understand the meaning of the numbers they learn from school to make it fun for them. You can go to shopping together and make her add the prices of the items you are purchasing. This can also help her in learning rounding off numbers as well as subtraction. Going to the grocery together allow you to train her how to weigh grocery items, calculate their costs and learn budgeting.
You can also encourage them to help you in baking and make them calculate ratio and proportions. This way, you also have a reward for them in the end - you can always buy her a favorite toy during shopping or you get to bake one of her favorite cookies. Even when traveling, you can make her learn about distance, time and even finding numbers on the street and make her do easy calculations while traveling.
If your child loves sports, you may want to incorporate some math learning into her sport activities. Making your child learn math through the activities they enjoy can indeed be a good way in making math fun.
Board games are also great ideas to making math fun. Monopoly is one of the board games that can help you teach your child math. It usually involves buying, selling and renting properties and helps your child calculate money, do some problem solving and improve their tactical abilities.
Chess and Chinese checkers are also great board games that you can play with your kids to help them learn math. These games allow them to learn and identify patterns as well as develop their tactical abilities as well.
You can also try riddles and puzzles to help them enjoy math. Sudoku for example is a great educational puzzle that can help your child develop math and logic skills as well as develop her critical thinking. Sudoku improves logic and reasoning by arranging the numbers one to nine in main grids and sub-grids. Keep in mind to start with the easy ones to motivate your child to love the game.
There are indeed a lot of math games that you can find and explore in making math fun to learn for your children. You just have to be creative and you will eventually find fun ways to make math fun for your children.
