While some people may say that it is distracting from the vocal aspect of the contest, the truth is that the show is trying to find an "idol", and what better idol than one with a guitar?
This year's winner played guitar onstage. Last year's winner played guitar onstage. That is no coincidence. Guitars are sexy, and for a stage performer, they are a great foil even if they music coming out of it is incidental to the song itself. In many cases, they are only a prop.
Everyone loves a guitar player. Whether it is the guy at summer camp who brings along his acoustic guitar, or the gal who plays in the coffee shop. Who doesn't appreciate the skill involved and the soul exposed when you hear a guitarist play? These people, however, weren't born playing that guitar - they spent many long hours repeating riffs, learning chords, deciphering songs.
