The scenario plays out on a regular basis, where management training has not been applied correctly and more so in a timely manner prior to an individual taking up the management position. The fact that leadership and management are somewhat intertwined, people fail to recognize the importance and benefits of management training prior to placing an individual in a responsible role.
Management training is not deemed necessary due to the oversight that people suffer from based upon an individuals performance within a given company, granted the individual may well be a top sales person, or extremely friendly and outgoing person, this does not however imply that he or she will make the grade as a manager or leader amongst the people that they worked with. The management training takes the process of separating work from play and teaching the individual the skills they need to lead their subordinates to accomplish the goals and strategies of the organization.
In order for a manager to effectively lead and manage people, many skills such as time management, conflict resolution as well as staff discipline. These factors especially the disciplinary one are vital in retaining an order and functional environment within the workplace, and are most often taught effectively in a suitable management training program. By merely putting an individual to manage his or her peers without sufficient planning and management training is nothing but a disaster waiting to happen.
Many forms of management training exist, with as many providers across the world, however the organization should look at its own specific and unique needs and requirements in order to establish a suitable program. The program can be outsourced or conducted on an in house basis and will depend upon the existing infrastructure and staffing of the organization concerned. The larger organizations tend to follow an induction program, which entails their managers from across the country, or world will be trained together at a specific venue. This does not mean that the small business manager should not be trained in the same capacity or at the same level, this will more likely be done on an outsourced basis, by a management training solutions provider.
Regardless of size or structure of the company concerned, even if the manager is exposed to informal training, the need thereof is essential in order for the company to achieve their desired goals and objectives. The responsibility of management is not a light weight task or element of the business, but rather carries the prerequisites for a dedicated individual to follow through.
Management training should never be overlooked or undervalued, and by presuming or assuming that the individual concerned is up to the task may well cost the company money in the long term, therefore ensure your future managers are trained adequately prior to their being placed into such a position of responsibility.
