To complete the FAFSA, you will need records of income earned in the year prior to when you will start school. For example, for the 2012-13 school year you will need financial information from 2011. You will also need to refer to:
Your Social Security Number; be sure it is correct!
Your driver's license (if any);
Your 2011 W-2 Forms and other records of money earned;
Your federal income tax return and your spouse's, if you are married;

Foreign tax return, or;

Your current bank statements;
Your current business and investment mortgage information; Your business and farm records, stock, bond and other investment records;
Your alien registration or permanent resident card (if you are not a United States citizen);
You will be able to identify 10 educational institutions as possible places for you to attend school. So, even though you have not been accepted, you can provide their name and FAFSA number on the FAFSA application so that your eligibility for government financial aid will be provided to each educational institution. Using the online FAFSA is easy as long as you take it one step at a time. If you are not aware of the FAFSA number for an educational institution which you may be attending, you can start inputting the name of the educational institution into the online application and it will search for likely matching school names so that you can then select the appropriate school and it's corresponding FAFSA number.
Once your application has been submitted, you will register for a user identification and password. If there is information that is flagged as needing clarification, you will be contacted and asked to go back into the application and revise information as needed and update your application.
